The Cat Who Spent Nine Lives Saving Me Chapter 06
Not every stray cat was willing to come into the shop.
Domino said, [Some cats were abandoned by humans. They don’t want to raise humans again.]
I had no choice but to place insulated cat shelters and timed feeders at the warehouse, then arrange for a rescue organization to spay and neuter them.
I named the shop “Domino & Sunny.” Oversized portraits of one cat and one dog hung by the entrance.
On the day Sunny was discharged, he stared at the sign for a long time.
[Did you find my owner?]
I crouched down and stroked his head.
“Eleanor went to a retirement community far away, and they don’t allow large dogs. She asked me to take care of you. You can live here, and you can still go to the old warehouse and wait for her every day.”
Could a dog understand death? I didn’t know. I only knew he had waited alone for three years. He shouldn’t have to lose his hope as well.
Domino rubbed against him.
[Stay. Boss will look after you.]
Sunny looked at the little cat’s size, then docilely nodded.
[I can guard the door. Just give me some food every month. I need to share it with the children at the warehouse.]
“There will always be food outside. Your job is to keep Domino company and stop him from thinking he’s a mob boss.”
Domino straightened his little body.
[Don’t worry. With Cat here, Cat can support one dog and one human.]
When Rowan and Maeve brought Ollie in to buy food, they noticed the sign advertising “animal communication.”
Rowan looked skeptical. “You can really understand him? Ollie has started barking like crazy whenever he sees a woman he doesn’t know. Maeve is the only exception.”
I asked Ollie about it. He immediately put both front paws on my shoulder.
[Dog knows Dad likes Maeve! Dog has to keep other women away from him!]
I relayed his answer while trying not to laugh.
Maeve turned bright red. Rowan stood frozen.
“Ollie is the only one I ever told.”
Ollie raced excitedly around the store.
[Is Dog getting a mom?]
