The Cat Who Spent Nine Lives Saving Me Chapter 16
Domino’s POV
Winter was very cold.
Cold enough to kill a cat.
When Cat was born, none of Cat’s brothers and sisters survived the blizzard. Cat alone remained, stumbling toward a trailer.
Someone saw Cat, picked up a rock, and threw it.
Humans were terrifying.
Then a little girl who was also shivering from the cold found Cat.
She hesitated for a long time, then suddenly turned and ran away.
Cat curled beside a wheel, too weak to hide. She was probably going to get a bigger rock.
But the girl returned with half a piece of chicken and a little carton of milk. She came every day, and the food always looked as if someone had already eaten half of it.
She must have been very poor.
Yet Cat survived on those strange things.
Later, the girl hid Cat in her bedroom. She shivered every night, so she and Cat had to squeeze beneath the same old blanket.
Cat lay on her chest and called to her.
[Human, give Cat a name.]
The stray cats said that having a name meant having a home.
Cat wanted a home with the girl.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t understand. Every day before she left, she only whispered, “Don’t make a sound. Once I grow up and earn some money, I’ll take you away with me.”
Cat didn’t understand, but Cat respected her wishes.
One human and one cat. It was nice.
But those days didn’t last long.
Cat was taken to a building that smelled of fear. Iron doors closed one after another, and Cat never saw the girl again.
After Cat died, Cat saw the girl crying in the blizzard.
She used to smile whenever she saw Cat. After that day, she seemed to forget how to be happy.
She grew up and found a job. She paid bill after bill for her bloodsucking parents and brother, and the smiles on her face grew fewer and fewer.
Cat worked odd jobs in Heaven’s animal waiting area for many years.
The clerk said Cat’s last life had been too miserable, so in the next one, Cat could be a cat with nine lives. If Cat was reborn as an expensive pedigree animal, Cat might find a rich owner with a fireplace and a big house.
Cat hesitated for a long time, but still wanted to be the girl’s cat.
But the girl would no longer keep cats. What could Cat do?
Cat worked hard and finally earned a chance to return to the human world. The clerk gave Cat a gift, then offered a stern warning: nine lives sounded like a lot, but when they were gone, they were truly gone.
Cat searched city after city for the girl.
Life on the streets cost Cat seven lives.
Then one day, Cat caught the girl’s familiar scent from below a building.
Looking up, Cat saw her jump from the rooftop.
Without hesitation, Cat sacrificed the eighth life to turn back time.
Then the girl walked onto the rooftop again and saw a tuxedo cat lying in the snow, exposing its white belly.
[Winter is too cold.]
[Human, take Cat home.]
This time, Cat would take care of you.
