The Daughter They Abandoned Is The Doctor They Can’t Reach Chapter 12

The Daughter They Abandoned Is The Doctor They Can’t Reach Chapter 12

The next day, WTAE-TV aired a local-pride feature.

The reporter had contacted Duke’s press office and gotten my official photo and footage from the summer program. In the segment, I was shown speaking in a lecture hall and checking research data with a faculty mentor.

At the end, the anchor said, “We tried to contact Nora’s family to share in their joy. Unfortunately, they do not appear to be local at the moment and did not respond to our request for comment.”

It was an objective statement, but everyone could hear the implication.

The story was then posted online under the headline: Pittsburgh Girl Wins Full Duke Scholarship—How Did She Do It?

The link spread through community forums, my high school alumni groups, and parent chats. Neighbors who used to not even know my name started praising how accomplished I was, and my old school even put the article on the front page of its website.

I knew none of this.

At lunch, Eli sent me the link.

“You’re famous back home.”

I opened the page. There were already hundreds of comments. Some people were asking about my study methods. Others wanted to know why my family seemed to be missing from such an important moment.

The photo showed me alone, standing in front of Duke’s iconic chapel, smiling calmly.

I finished reading, closed the page, and kept eating.

A few hours later, my father called again.

This time, he didn’t start by accusing me of embarrassing the family.

“Nora.” His voice was gentler than I had ever heard it. “Can we talk seriously?”
