The Daughter They Abandoned Is The Doctor They Can’t Reach Chapter 30

The Daughter They Abandoned Is The Doctor They Can’t Reach Chapter 30

Four years later, I stood in the graduation auditorium again.

This time, I was wearing a cap and gown, with the cords of highest honors draped across my chest.

Ms. Alvarez was seated in the guest section.

My bookstore manager had closed the shop for half a day to be there. Eli stood on the other side of the graduating class, waving at me through the crowd.

My parents were not there.

My mother had asked once, in advance, and I told her the invitations were still my decision.

She had been silent for a long time before replying: *I understand.*

The night before the ceremony, my father sent his first email.

There were no requests, no explanations.

*Nora, I’m sorry. Not because of the news, and not because of what other people think. I’m sorry I missed the time when you needed me.*

I read it, then set my phone aside.

Some apologies deserve to be heard.

But hearing them doesn’t mean everything can be undone.

When the president called my name, I walked onto the stage.

The diploma was placed in my hand, and applause rose from the audience.

I didn’t look for the people who weren’t there.

As soon as I stepped down, Ms. Alvarez was the first to hug me.

“So what’s next?”

“Boston,” I said. “The doctoral program offered full funding. I start next month.”

My bookstore manager laughed, wiping at the corner of his eye.

Eli pushed through the crowd and handed me a cup of black coffee.

Written on the sleeve was a single line:

*Don’t forget to eat, future Dr. Hale.*

“And you?” I asked.

“I got into the research institute a few blocks away,” he said. “But which apartment I rent depends on your opinion.”

“Why?”

“Because I want to be closer to you.”

He added quickly, “Just want to. The decision’s yours.”

I took the coffee.

“Then let’s look at a map first.”
