The Diary Of An Unloved Wife Chapter 14

He pulled that notebook out from his inner pocket.

I knew he had seen it.

His voice was shaking.

“I love you, and you love me too. Why did we end up like this? Iris, this isn’t fair to me…”

I didn’t feel sad; I just found it laughable.

“Fair?”

“You’re talking to me about fairness now?”

I even laughed.

I found it completely absurd.

“It’s not fair to you? So those five years… did I just deserve it? Did that unborn child just deserve it?”

“Were you ever fair to me?”

His face turned completely pale.

His lips moved a few times, and in the end, all he could say was, “I’m sorry.”

I composed myself.

I handed the document over again. “Sign it. Stop clinging to me. There’s really no point.”

He looked up at me.

“Did you come back just to divorce me?”

“Yes.”

He continued asking, “Why so suddenly? Why do you suddenly have to finalize the divorce now?”

I froze for a moment and told him the truth.

“Because I met someone I want to spend the rest of my life with. I want to marry him.”

Beckett swayed.

His laugh came out hoarse, catching painfully in his throat.

“Is that so?”

His eyes were full of grief. It was as if he was running through everything, wondering if he hadn’t done all those things over the years, if we had just talked honestly, whether things might have ended differently…

With that in mind, he asked it out loud.

I met his hopeful gaze and cut off his delusions.

“There are no what-ifs, Beckett.”

He lowered his head, refusing to let me see his eyes.

“Right… no what-ifs…”

He reached out, took the settlement agreement, and signed his name.

His hand trembled as he wrote the final letter.

I put it in my bag.

“I’ll leave the rest for the lawyers to finish.”

“Goodbye forever, Beckett.”

After saying that, I simply walked away.

After getting in the car, I looked in the rearview mirror and saw that figure standing frozen, his shoulders trembling.

I was moving forward.

But he seemed trapped in the past, trapped in exactly the same place.
