The DNA Test That Backfired Chapter 14

After news of the divorce spread, Zane’s position in the company became precarious.

His father was already deeply disappointed in him.

Before long, he removed Zane from his core management role, giving him a respectable title but stripping him of any real decision-making power.

Once his circumstances changed, Camille immediately turned on him.

I heard she soon grew close with the heir of another corporation.

A few months later, she announced her engagement with great fanfare.

Only then did Zane truly understand.

The woman he had yearned for all those years cared only about the Marino family fortune and the inheritance rights he had once been poised to receive.

Now that those things were out of his reach, she wouldn’t even spare him a second glance.

…

During that time, Zane often came to stand outside the apartment building where Teddy and I lived, sometimes staying for hours.

Once, during a downpour, he was soaked to the bone and asked the doorman to call up, saying he wanted to see Teddy.

I held my son by the window and looked down at him through the rain for a long moment.

Teddy leaned his head against my shoulder and asked softly,

“Mom, who is that? Why doesn’t he have an umbrella?”

I stroked his hair.

“No one important,” I said. “Don’t look anymore. Let’s go back inside.”
