The General’s Ex-Wife Is A Colonel He Can’t Have Chapter 04
Once a man gives his heart to someone else, dragging him back only leaves you with an empty shell.
I hurried downstairs.
I had barely stepped outside when Beau came after me, catching my wrist.
He still hadn’t caught his breath, and his collar was crooked.
“What are you doing here?”
“Just now… what did you hear?”
I pulled my hand back.
“I came to file the move-out paperwork. The door was closed, so I left.”
He visibly relaxed.
“I was out of town for exercises this week. Just got back. Kinsley said she needed a place to rehearse, so I lent her the key. Don’t overthink it.”
The excuse was pathetic. I couldn’t even be bothered to call him on it. I just turned to leave.
Just then, a loud crash came from inside.
It sounded like shattering glass.
A second later, flames burst from the window.
Beau’s face changed instantly.
He grabbed my chin, his eyes blazing.
“Did you do this?”
“Celine, I thought you’d finally come to your senses. I didn’t think you’d pull something like this.”
“I’m telling you, Kinsley is staying here with my permission. If anything happens to her, the MPs will come for you first.”
He let me go, turned, and charged straight into the fire.
I was ready to leave.
But in the next second, I remembered: my transfer orders and the notarized copies of my parents’ service records were locked in the old safe inside that apartment.
I grabbed the fire extinguisher from the hallway, smashed the window, and climbed through the heat.
The room was thick with smoke.
Beau was carrying Kinsley toward the door.
When he saw me, his face turned colder.
“What the hell are you doing in here? Haven’t you caused enough chaos?”
I ignored him and ran into the bedroom.
The flames were already licking at the curtains. The old safe was beside the closet.
“Celine, get out!” Beau shouted from the doorway. “Have you lost your mind?”
I dropped to my knees before the safe, my fingers fumbling with the combination.
The moment the door popped open, the light fixture crashed down from the ceiling.
Instinctively, Beau threw himself over Kinsley, shielding her as he backed away.
The blast of heat knocked me to the ground. Shards of glass bit into my arm and shoulder.
Blood soaked through my uniform instantly.
Clenching my teeth, I yanked the document pouch out and hugged it to my chest.
Smoke flooded my lungs. My vision started to black out.
Just before I lost consciousness, I heard Beau’s footsteps as he carried Kinsley out of the building.
Farther away, I heard the wail of fire engines.
