The One He Left Became The One He Couldn’t Have Chapter 17
“I’ll find time to come back and see her.”
“If possible, I can bring her to Boston.”
“Are you planning to never return to New York?”
Adrian’s voice suddenly flared with anger.
I looked down and smiled.
“Why not?”
Yes. I was marrying into Boston.
Naturally my life would center here now.
But there was no need to tell Adrian any of that.
“Gianna, you’re still the same. Reckless. Immature.”
“You haven’t grown up at all.”
Adrian’s tone turned colder.
“You’d better not regret this, Gianna.”
“Regret what?”
“Summer and I are engaged.”
“We’re finalizing the wedding date.”
“And?”
“Gianna, don’t pretend you don’t understand.”
“If I actually marry Summer, you—”
My laugh came light and free.
“Adrian, you were right. I was young and foolish before. Couldn’t tell dependence from love. Thank you for making it so clear today. Now I can finally go live the life I’m actually meant for. No baggage.”
Silence swallowed the other end of the line.
I didn’t wait for him to speak. Just gently hung up.
Sixteen years old. A girl’s first crush.
And it spiraled out of control from there.
Stubborn. Defiant. Refused to call him brother anymore.
Now almost six years had slipped by.
He’d finally returned to his original, proper place.
I didn’t hate him. Didn’t resent him.
After all those years together day and night.
I genuinely wished him well.
