The Underboss Voted No So I Chose A New Life Chapter 13
The next day, one of the cleaners asked me, “Mireille, do you want this expired plane ticket?”
I glanced at it.
“No.”
As the paper ticket fell into the trash, I heard the faint sound of footsteps outside the office.
Hadrian hadn’t left.
He stood at the corner, watching the cleaner tie off the garbage bag, and didn’t move for a long time.
…
After the refund from the wedding venue came through, I transferred Hadrian his half.
He called almost immediately.
“You’re really going to split the deposit this cleanly?”
“It was always supposed to be half each.”
“And the apartment?”
“The realtor has already listed it. I wrote out the down payment and renovation costs. Once it sells, we’ll split it by percentage.”
His breathing deepened.
“That was the place we bought to live in together.”
“It isn’t anymore.”
“Mireille, do you really have to turn seven years into a balance sheet?”
“It’s not about numbers.”
“Then what is it?”
I looked at the route draft on my desk.
“It’s about returning what was never mine.”
Including the family dinner that never happened.
Including a place I had never truly been given.
He didn’t say anything else.
