The Wedding Game That Cost Him Everything Chapter 39
The following spring, I went back to the United States.
I didn’t tell the Moretti Family.
And I didn’t let Chloe pass the news to anyone, either.
She drove me to see my parents.
Peace sat in the backseat the whole way, hugging the doll I had bought her.
My parents’ new resting place was quiet.
There was no water in sight.
When the wind moved through the leaves, it made only a very soft sound.
I set down the flowers and crouched before their graves.
“Mom. Dad.”
For a long time, there was no answer.
I used to think that when those two words left my mouth, someone ought to turn around.
Later, I had brought Tucker to stand before their graves.
He had sworn there that he would never make me unhappy.
I had thought that if my parents were gone, at least there was one person left who could love me in their place.
Looking back now, that was never a responsibility that should have been handed to someone else.
Chloe stood in the distance with Peace, not coming over to disturb me.
Slowly, I told them everything from the past few years.
I told them my hand had healed.
I told them that after my fellowship ended, I stayed at that hospital.
And I told them Tucker and Sloane had lost their power and would never find this place again.
At the very end, I told them:
“I’m doing well.”
And that was true.
When I stood up, Peace ran over and set down a little flower she had already crushed in her hand.
“For Isolde’s mommy and daddy.”
I stroked her hair.
“Thank you.”
