The Wife He Forgot To Love Chapter 04

The Wife He Forgot To Love Chapter 04

When we left, Alicia walked us to the door. After Jonathan stepped into the elevator first, she held my hand and said, “Daniela, about you and Jon… let’s just wait and see, okay?”

Those simple words clearly meant she disapproved of us being together.

I asked Jonathan, “What if your mom doesn’t agree?”

He said, “I’m the one marrying you, not my mom.”

I muttered, “Your family is so well-off. I’m not good enough for you.”

He looked straight at me, “Daniela, you’re worthy of anyone. The world owes you.”

There was another line he said that stayed with me for years on end.

“You’re like a tree growing out of cracked stone. Trees are never meant to take root there, yet you made it. That makes you stronger than every tree planted safely in a fine garden.”

I carried those words with me for years.

In my darkest moments of doubt, they were the only thing keeping me afloat.

Over time, something inside me hardened.

I thought it’d make me stronger. But what’s too hard breaks the easiest.

Eventually, his parents came to visit my home.

Jonathan was dead set on marrying me, no matter what stood in his way.

It was winter break. The cold in the northwest was brutal, and the wind cut bitterly against the face.

I headed back a day early to clean the house thoroughly, sweeping the yard, wiping tables, and changing bed sheets. Still, I could do nothing about the peeling wall plaster that flaked off constantly, looking unsightly.

Alicia stood in our yard in her camel-colored overcoat. When chickens scurried past her feet, she quietly shifted half a step aside without a word.

His father, Ricardo Aguirre, stood at the doorway in a jacket, glanced inside briefly, and chose not to set foot in.

Mom was overjoyed. She asked Jonathan a few simple questions, then said something that made me burn with embarrassment, “Let me make it clear first. I want a big gift when they get married, and it all goes to me.”

I wished I could vanish into thin air right then.

Jonathan shot me a glance.

I’d never forget that look for the rest of my life. There was no anger or displeasure in it, only shock, awkwardness, and a faint emotion I could never properly name.

He felt embarrassed on my behalf.

Alicia never uttered a single harsh word, yet the way she looked at me made it plain that she thought I was far from good enough for her son.

Later on, she called me personally to voice her disapproval of our relationship.

“Daniela, I know you’re a nice girl. But you and Jon are from two different worlds. Marriage is nothing like you imagine. Love can’t overcome everything. Reality wears down every feeling. Jon isn’t thinking straight right now. You’re a good young lady. I hope you can be sensible.”

I didn’t argue or explain.

After ending the call, I deleted all contact details of Jonathan and blocked him completely.

It was never because I stopped loving him. I just could not bear having others judge my origins, my family, and my humble background as if I were nothing more than a commodity to be inspected.

I could not stand hearing his mother imply I was unworthy of him in such a polite yet dismissive tone.

That night, I cried until morning, telling myself it was better to end it all, as we truly belonged to two entirely different worlds.

The next morning, my roommate told me someone was waiting for me downstairs in the dormitory.

When I went down, I found Jonathan standing there with bloodshot eyes, messy hair, and crumpled clothes, looking as if he had waited there all night.

He walked over and grabbed my hand, gripping it so hard it hurt my bones.

“Just leave,” I whispered.

He refused to go. I turned to walk away, and he followed closely behind.

I broke into a run, and he ran after me, too.

I crouched down and wrapped my arms tightly around my knees. “Jonathan, stop chasing me. Your mom is right—we’re never meant to be together.”

He crouched down beside me as well. “Daniela, look at me.”

I lifted my eyes to meet his gaze.

“I don’t care what anyone else says. I only need one answer—do you have feelings for me?”

“Yes, I do,” I answered softly.

“Then are you brave enough to take a chance with me?”
