They Never Saved Me A Seat So I Built My Own Table Chapter 14
“It wasn’t that you didn’t know.”
“It was that you were okay with it. Every single time.”
Bianca’s face went white.
Matteo looked like he was about to defend her, but when his eyes met mine, he slowly closed his mouth.
This time, he didn’t tell me to be more understanding.
But it was too late.
I stood up and pushed my chair back under the table.
“You don’t need to make up for any more gifts, and you don’t need to keep saving me a fifth seat.”
“I’m not coming back to be the version of Alessia that only exists in your memory.”
Nico’s eyes were red.
“Can we still be friends?”
I thought of all those years I’d spent behind a camera, documenting a friendship I was never truly a part of.
“No.”
The word came out more calmly than I expected.
I turned to leave.
“Alessia,” Matteo called out from behind me.
This time, he didn’t tell me to stop. He didn’t accuse me of being unreasonable.
He just stood there, his voice rough.
“I’m sorry.”
My footsteps paused for a fraction of a second.
But I didn’t turn back.
I heard the apology.
I just had no intention of accepting it.
