They Rejected Me—Then I Married The Billionaire They Feared Chapter 06

Halfway through the party, the sound of helicopter rotors cut through the night outside.

Several black helicopters set down on the lawn. Crate after crate of pink roses were carried into the ballroom. The staff spread them along both sides of the red carpet until the whole hall went silent.

Felix Hale was wheeled off one of the helicopters by his assistant.

He wore a black suit. His face was cold—but his eyes never left me.

My father blinked.

“He came himself?”

Guests murmured among themselves.

To them, whatever had happened to Felix’s body, he was still the only Hale heir. The Hales were old money, rooted in New York for generations. The Grants had risen in the last few decades—rich, yes, but without the same deep foundation.

Everyone in that room assumed I was the one marrying up. No one imagined the Hales would treat me as anything special.

But Felix stopped at the end of the red carpet and looked straight at me.

“It’s my own engagement party. I couldn’t very well miss it.”

He raised a hand, offering a bouquet of roses flown in from France.

“Am I late?”

I took the flowers.

“Right on time.”

The cold in his face softened.

The expressions around us shifted too.

That was the moment Adrian walked in through the main doors.

Someone whispered, “He came back? Having second thoughts?”

“They grew up together. All he has to do is bow his head—she’ll take him back.”

Felix’s grip on my hand tightened, just a fraction.

Adrian saw our fingers laced together, and his face darkened. He crossed the room to Felix and forced the words out.

“Mr. Hale, I apologize. Evelyn’s been spoiled all her life. If anything she said earlier gave you the wrong impression, please don’t take it to heart.”

He turned and held his hand out to me.

“Enough of this.”

Felix looked up at him.

“Who are you?”

Adrian’s face froze.

For years, Adrian had represented Grant Group at every gala in the city. There was no way Felix hadn’t heard his name.

That single question, delivered in front of everyone, was Felix stripping him bare.

Felix’s voice stayed mild.

“If you’re just a boy the Grants once sponsored, you don’t have the standing to speak for her.”

Adrian’s fingers curled into fists. He kept his eyes on me.

“Evelyn. Are you really going to gamble your own marriage out of spite?”

I smiled.

“Felix and I are already engaged. Did you rush back here to steal me away?”

Adrian’s expression cracked.

“Of course not.”

Then, through gritted teeth, “I only came back because I don’t want you regretting it later—and dragging the entire Grant family down with you.”

I looked at him.

“You don’t need to worry about that. Your name is Shaw.”
