They Voted Me Out Of The Wedding So I Canceled It Chapter 18
Downstairs from the law office, the Goodwill truck pulled away from the curb.
Evan stared at the box disappearing through the rear window and suddenly said, “Claire, I know where those nine yes votes came from now.”
“I know.”
“For years, whenever I didn’t want to say no to them, I used you as an excuse. I made everyone think you were the cold one, the one ruining the mood.”
“I know.”
“I’ll explain it to them. I’ll tell them I was the one who was wrong.”
I looked at him. “Evan, I don’t care what they think of me anymore.”
He reached out a hand, then let it drop.
“Then what do you care about?”
“My company. And my dog.”
“What else?”
I thought for a moment.
“Myself.”
The word hit him like a physical blow. He lowered his head, his shoulders trembling.
After a long time, he finally asked in a hoarse voice, “If I cast my vote for you now… is it too late?”
“The voting is over, Evan.”
I walked past him without looking back.
Up ahead, the truck had stopped at a red light. The back doors were shut tight.
Inside were Ava’s drawings, her certificates, her Mother’s Day cards—and ten years of my life that I would never go back for.
The light turned green.
The truck drove on. Evan was still standing on the sidewalk when I turned the corner.
