Three Days Until Goodbye Chapter 08
After I heard that, I felt nothing at all. I calmly finished my lunch.
Then I drove to the game studio for an interview.
The guy who received me wore casual clothes, brimming with boyish energy.
His eyes were bright. “I know you — you’re one of our school’s outstanding graduates. Our adviser still praises you all the time.”
It looked like he was my junior.
I smiled lightly.
“Then please take care of me from here on out.”
The studio wasn’t big, but everyone was nice, and I settled in quickly.
That night, my junior, Brian Powell, kept pestering me, wanting to have dinner with me.
With no way to shut him up, I agreed helplessly.
But the moment I stepped into the restaurant, pain shot through my wrist. A violent force yanked me, and I stumbled backward, about to topple over.
Yet I didn’t actually fall — I landed in a pair of arms that had once been the most familiar in the world.
I pushed him away on instinct.
“Alexander, why are you still here?”
“So I should leave and let you fool around with some random man?”
Alexander hovered on the edge of fury, eyes bloodshot as he glared viciously at Brian.
Then he swung a brutal punch at him.
Alexander moved too fast — Brian didn’t even have time to dodge.
Blood immediately streamed from his nose.
I hurried to support Brian, and after confirming he wasn’t seriously hurt, I couldn’t help roaring at Alexander.
“Watch your mouth! Brian is just my coworker — we met for the first time today. If you don’t believe me, go check.”
“It’d better be.”
Alexander sneered, cruelty and disdain flashing through his eyes.
“Besides, he looks pretty young. He probably wouldn’t be into an old woman like you who’s pushing 30. I’m the only one who doesn’t mind you.”
Just then, Sabrina walked into the restaurant holding a glass of mango juice.
A fake smile hung on her face.
“Madyson, this is juice I squeezed myself for you. Have a taste, and don’t stay mad about what happened before.”
I didn’t move, my face dark.
And of course Alexander still didn’t notice.
He reached out to steady my shoulder, his tone carrying a trace of pleading.
“Mady, drink this, come back home with me, and get along with Brina properly.”
I couldn’t take it anymore.
I smacked his hand away and splashed the mango juice all over his expensive bespoke suit.
Sabrina shrieked in fright and rushed up, trying to stop me.
I didn’t hold back — I rewarded her with a loud slap across the face.
“Alexander, do you really think I can’t live without you? So you deliberately use mango juice to disgust me.”
My gaze on Alexander was full of revulsion.
Alexander lowered his head to look at the liquid on his suit. His expression darkened instantly, and he turned to Sabrina.
“Didn’t I tell you to squeeze orange juice?”
Tears slid down Sabrina’s red, swollen face in two clear tracks.
“I’m sorry, Alex. I just thought mangoes are more expensive, and I wanted Madyson to have something better.”
I couldn’t be bothered to tangle with those two. Supporting the injured Brian, I prepared to leave.
But Alexander seized my wrist again.
“You’ve hit me and made a scene. You should be over it now, right?”
All of a sudden, Brian stepped in front of me, hatred filling his eyes.
“Are you blind? Can’t you tell she wants to leave? Get lost.”
Alexander didn’t respond to him.
He locked eyes with me behind Brian’s protection.
“Mady, he talks to me like that — how should I punish him?”
I lowered my head and glanced at my phone screen flashing with an incoming call.
It was probably Chelsea getting worried because I hadn’t come home so late.
I hung up first, then slowly walked up to Alexander.
His eyes lit up. “I knew you still love me…”
Before he could finish, I slapped him hard across the face.
“For the sake of what you once did for the Dawes family, I didn’t want to lay a hand on you.”
“But since you’re so eager to show up to the board meeting with a handprint on your face, I’ll grant your wish.”
Alexander froze, staring at me in disbelief.
“Mady, I spoiled you for five years, and you hit me for some random man you’ve known for one day?”
It was a question I had wanted to ask him, too.
I had cajoled and clung to him for five years.
I had catered to his moods and taken meticulous care of his daily life.
So why, on the very first day Sabrina came back, did he bully me like that?
Was it because he counted on the fact that I loved him and wouldn’t dare leave?
Under Alexander’s stunned gaze, I smiled — my voice cruel enough all the same.
“Because Brian is my coworker.”
“And you are nothing.”
