When My Eyes Opened Again Chapter 05
However, that wasn’t what concerned me the most.
I asked him in a low, grim voice:
“Didn’t you tell me you personally put Lucas in prison?
Why was he at our house?
He even dared to attack me so brazenly.”
Brady froze for a moment before saying:
“Lucas… got early release for good behavior in prison. But don’t worry, darling. This will be the first and last time. I’ll beef up security and make sure he never shows up near you again.”
As he spoke, his phone chimed. I didn’t know what message came through, but Brady looked at his screen with a faint smile, then immediately stood up and told me:
“Babe, something urgent just came up at the company. I need to go handle it. Just let the nurse know if you need anything.”
As he turned around, I saw with crystal clarity that the name on the chat screen was Carmen.
Enduring the pain in the back of my head and forearm, I propped myself up and got out of bed, only to find my medical chart left on the table by the nurse.
On it, it clearly stated that two hours ago, I had undergone a full-thickness skin graft harvesting procedure on my forearm.
Skin harvesting? What skin did they take?
Skin from my forearm… and who was it harvested for?
A horrifying possibility suddenly struck me. My eyes widened in disbelief, and grabbing my phone, I rushed straight to the security monitoring room.
Only an elderly guard was on duty in the monitoring room. I walked up and handed him a bank card.
“There’s five million on this card. Step out and let me check some footage, and the money is all yours.”
Overjoyed, the old man took the card and left. Sitting before the computer, I rewound the surveillance timestamp, and soon watched the conversation between Brady and Carmen while I was unconscious.
In the video, Carmen pointed at me on the hospital bed, complaining indignantly to Brady:
“How could Chloe go this far? My brother wronged her years ago, and now she pulls a knife on him?
Is there no justice left in this world?!”
Brady’s expression darkened. He took Carmen by the shoulders, frowning as he asked her, “Chloe has always been kind to everyone. Besides, she’s blind now. How could she suddenly attack your brother?
There must be more to this.”
“And another thing—I said I’d look over your brother’s project proposal, but I never gave him permission to come straight to my house looking for me.”
Carmen stared at him blankly, her face filled with shock and resentment:
“So, you think this is all my brother’s fault—all my fault, don’t you? Even the servants at home said they saw it with their own eyes… that Chloe suddenly went mad and started stabbing him the moment she recognized my brother’s voice! Do you refuse to believe all that too?”
Brady sighed softly. “That’s not what I meant.”
“That’s exactly what you’re thinking!”
Carmen shoved him away fiercely, crying out in agitation:
“Oh right, how could I forget-Chloe is your lawfully wedded wife. No wonder you’re defending her! I’m grabbing my child and my brother, I’m leaving LA this instant. I won’t get in the way of your happiness ever again!”
She turned to leave as soon as she finished speaking, but Brady pulled her into an embrace from behind. “I believe you. I believe you, alright?”
Where no one could see, Carmen curled her lips into a faint smirk, though her tone remained full of grievance,
“In that case, since Mrs. Voss intentionally hurt someone, shouldn’t she make some compensation?
The cut on my brother’s arm is so deep that the doctor said it’ll leave a scar. How about this: make Mrs. Voss give him a skin graft, and I’ll believe you’re truly fair and just.”
Hearing this, Brady subconsciously glanced at me, unconscious in the hospital bed, but without much hesitation, he rasped to Carmen, “Fine, whatever you say…”
Watching this, how could I not understand where the wound on my arm came from?
Shutting off the surveillance footage with trembling hands, even though I had long seen Brady’s true colors, a sharp pain still tore uncontrollably through my heart.
This was the husband I had painstakingly chosen and loved for so many years.
To think he would actually take advantage of my coma to have someone cut away my flesh just to graft it onto my enemy.
Fine. Just wonderful…
Swallowing the bitter ache in my chest, I quickly copied and saved the security footage.
It didn’t matter.
Before long, all of this would be made public, and piece by piece, I would tear off the hypocritical masks he and Carmen wore with my own hands.
On the way back to my hospital room, I continued tapping my white cane to pretend I was blind, yet I could not shake the feeling that someone was tailing me.
Before I could even turn to look, a sudden blunt pain struck the back of my neck, and darkness swept over my eyes as I collapsed.
