You Thought My Turn Could Always Come Later Chapter 07
The next morning, I was called to the principal’s office.
Ronan Burke was sitting inside.
He clearly hadn’t slept. His eyes were bloodshot, and his jacket was spattered with mud from the road.
The moment he saw me, he stood up.
“Sabine.”
I stopped at the door, making no move to go closer.
He forced a thin, tired smile.
“Come home with me, honey.”
“Yesterday was my fault. You can be angry, you can yell at me. But you can’t just run off this far all by yourself.”
I set the transfer confirmation form on the principal’s desk.
“I didn’t run off.”
“I came here for school.”
Anxiety crept into Ronan’s voice.
“Even so, you should have talked it over with us.”
“You’re only fifteen. What if you have an asthma attack living so far away? Who’s going to take care of you?”
I looked at him.
“So now you remember I have asthma?”
His face went white.
The office fell silent.
Ms. Ward frowned.
“Mr. Burke, you weren’t aware of this before?”
Ronan’s lips moved, but the words were barely a whisper.
“I knew. I just… I didn’t think it was that serious.”
“I was diagnosed when I was seven,” I said calmly.
“The words ‘Emergency Medication’ are printed right on the inhaler.”
“After Chloe crushed it, you said you’d just buy me a new one.”
Ronan lowered his head, his fingers digging into the seams of his pants.
“I was wrong.”
“I know I was wrong. I really do.”
He took a step toward me, reaching for my hand.
I stepped back.
His hand stopped, suspended in the air between us.
Just then, the office door opened again.
