You Thought My Turn Could Always Come Later Chapter 09
The color drained from Caroline’s face.
Then I looked at Ronan.
“You can never remember when the school holds parent-teacher conferences.”
“You couldn’t remember what time my awards ceremony was.”
“But you remembered that Chloe wanted a cake for the weekend.”
Ronan’s eyes were bloodshot.
“Sabine, I can change.”
“You’ve said that before. A lot.”
I pushed two documents across the desk toward them.
“One is the housing consent form.”
“The other is the school transfer confirmation.”
“Sign them, and I stay here.”
Caroline refused instantly.
“No.”
“You’re a child. What gives you the right to make these decisions on your own?”
I took out my phone and opened the file Ms. Ward had helped me prepare.
It held records of my solo bus rides, photos of the crushed inhaler, and documentation of their repeated absences from school events.
“You don’t have to sign.”
“The school can also contact Child Protective Services to re-evaluate my guardianship.”
An ugly expression twisted Caroline’s face.
Ronan just kept staring at the photos on the screen.
After a long time, he picked up the pen.
Before he wrote, he asked me softly, “If I sign this, does it mean you’re never coming home?”
I didn’t answer.
The answer was already obvious.
Ronan’s hand trembled.
But in the end, he signed his name.
And as he signed, he finally understood.
I wasn’t going back with him.
