You Thought My Turn Could Always Come Later Chapter 16

Caroline’s jaw was tight.

“Do you hate me that much?”

“I don’t hate you.”

“Then why won’t you come home?”

I looked at her.

“Because if I go back, I’ll just be waiting again.”

“Waiting for you to remember me.”

“Waiting to see if Dad will finally choose me.”

“I don’t want to wait anymore.”

The room was utterly silent.

Ronan was the first to pick up the pen.

After he signed, he pushed the documents toward Caroline.

“Sign it.”

Her hand gripped the pen so tightly her knuckles turned white. Tears fell onto the paper, one by one.

In the end, she signed, too.

When we walked out of the meeting room, Chloe was waiting by the door.

She had lost weight and wasn’t wearing any of her pretty new clothes.

The moment she saw me, she rushed forward.

“Are you happy now, Sabine?”

“My mom and Ronan are getting a divorce. We have to move back to our old dump.”

“This is all your fault!”

Ronan’s face darkened.

“Chloe, apologize.”

Her eyes, red-rimmed, glared at me.

“Why should I?”

“She has everything.”

“Good grades, teachers who like her, all that prize money. And now both of you are running around after her.”

I looked at her.

“You think I have everything?”

“You faked a stomachache, and my dad skipped my awards ceremony.”

“You cried, and he gave you the present that was meant for me.”

“The things he gave me to brush me aside were the same things you treasured like they were gold.”

Chloe’s face flushed.

“Who are you calling a treasure?”

“I wasn’t talking about you.”

I looked at Ronan.

“I was talking about a father’s love that could be given away at any moment.”

Ronan’s face went chalk-white.

Chloe froze.

I walked past her.

“You never stole anything from me.”

“He was the one who walked toward you, over and over again.”

Behind me, I heard a muffled sob.

I didn’t turn around.

Now they were finally hurting.

But that had nothing to do with me anymore.
