You Told Me To Walk So I Walked Right Out Of Your Lives Chapter 31

Her tears fell instantly.

“Do you have to call me that?”

My father supported her, his voice heavy with an exhaustion he couldn’t hide.

“We’ve already paid the price. The house is gone. The company is gone. After Sofia’s livestream, she disappeared, and we don’t even know where she is.”

“So?”

“You’re our only child.”

I let out a soft, humorless laugh.

In the past, they had always said Sofia was more pitiful and needed them more.

Now that she was gone, I had become their only child.

“I’m not something you use to fill a vacancy.”

My father froze.

My mother opened the container, and the smell of lasagna drifted out.

“It was my fault before. From now on, I’ll make it for you every day, okay?”

“You only made it for me twice.”

Her hand trembled.

“You remember.”

“I remember everything.”

Not just the two lasagnas.

I also remembered the three-hundred-dollar limit, the broken sketchpad, and the hands that never reached for me by the lake.

They thought that if I just remembered a little bit of love, all the hurt could be papered over.

But memory doesn’t work that way.

My mother cried, “Then what do we have to do for you to forgive us?”

“Accept that I won’t.”

I looked at my father.

“And don’t come here again. These children don’t need to see people standing at the door, trying to force their teacher to acknowledge family she doesn’t have.”

My father’s face flushed.

He probably wanted to scold me, just like he used to.

But in the end, he only lowered his head.

“We understand.”

As my father pulled my mother away, she kept looking back at me.

I didn’t watch them go.
