This was the first time in three years Conor had ever sent me anything besides “K.”
At the gala, he’d watched Maya push back her chair, grab her trench coat, and stride out the ballroom doors without a backward glance.
The heavy mahogany doors sealed shut in front of him, cutting off the sight of her back.
He couldn’t find her for the rest of the night.
But he didn’t panic. He even went with a few old engineering buddies to their regular whiskey bar on Capitol Hill.
Three Macallans down, tie loosened, sunk into a leather sofa. He clinked glasses with the guys.
“Free.” He grinned, the satisfaction of a mild buzz on his face. “Three years. Finally some peace. That woman’s been walking around with a face like I owe her five million dollars. Annoying as hell.”
“For real, Conor. Just sign the damn papers and get it over with. We’ll set you up with some Tinder hotties. You’re still young. Don’t let a dead marriage drag you under.”
Conor laughed loudly, threw his head back, and downed the rest of his glass.
The alcohol burned down his throat. He’d never felt so relieved.
He even pulled out his phone and sent Hailey a Snapchat: [She finally agreed to sign. Celebrate?]
Hailey shot back a string of firework emojis.
One in the morning. Drunk, he drove the silver Audi RS6 back to the Capitol Hill townhouse.
He pushed the door open. The house was pitch black. Not a single light on.
“Maya?” He called out from habit.

He fumbled for the foyer light, kicked off his leather shoes, and stumbled into the kitchen, heading for the island to pour himself a glass of ice water. His hand bumped the Yeti thermos—

The last page. Her signature was already there. A folded white sheet was tucked beside it. He flipped it open casually.

Conor stared at that line of text for a full thirty seconds.
