Alcohol made his brain churn slowly, like rusted gears grinding against each other.
He frowned, flipping the paper over and over, trying to confirm he wasn’t reading it wrong.
Then he grabbed his phone and started texting Maya.
The first message still carried the tone of irritated reproach.
[Maya, where are you? Why are you taking suitcases? Stop messing around, okay?]
The second. Anger started seeping through the cracks in the words.
[Why do you want a divorce?! And you went behind my back and got rid of the baby?! Are you fucking insane?!]
The third. Outrage. The fury of being wronged.
[I will never forgive you for this selfishness!]
He sent over a dozen messages in a row.
Accusation bled into interrogation. Interrogation bled into threats.
The phone screen’s glow lit his face. His expression shifted from a cold sneer to teeth-grinding fury, from fury to blank confusion.
No reply. Not even a single “K.”
Conor grabbed his car keys and stormed out. The Audi RS6’s engine roared through the empty streets at one in the morning. He hit a hundred and ten miles an hour on the I-5.
The wipers thrashed madly. The mist on the windshield wouldn’t clear no matter what.
His phone buzzed suddenly.
He grabbed it with one hand—a booking confirmation text from Maya.
Not sent to him. Automatically synced to the family shared account.
Delta Air Lines. Seattle-Tacoma Airport. Direct flight to London Heathrow.
He wrenched the steering wheel. The tires screamed against the wet asphalt.
Then—
The airbag deployed with the muffled boom of a thunderclap. His forehead slammed into the steering wheel and bounced back. His nose filled with the stench of blood and the acrid burn of chemical powder.
He didn’t stop.
He ripped the airbag aside. Blood ran down his eyebrow into his left eye, turning the whole world into a blurred smear of crimson.
He swiped at his eye with the heel of his right palm and kept his foot on the gas.
