I Married The Disabled Billionaire Then My Family Begged Me To Come Back Chapter 09
The Truth About My Birth
Evelyn stops crying at once.
Her eyes go wide.
Real fear flashes across her face.
I smile.
“Oh, you thought I didn’t know?”
“The first day I came back to the Hale family, I checked the records myself.”
“There was no nurse mistake.”
“There was no hospital mix-up.”
“There was only you.”
I look from Evelyn to Henry.
Both of them look like they’ve seen a ghost.
“You paid some celebrity psychic to read my birth chart.”
“She told you I was cursed.”
“She said if you kept me, I’d bring death into the family and drain the Hale fortune dry.”
“So you threw your own baby away.”
“You shipped me off to poor relatives in the middle of nowhere overnight and left me there to rot.”
The rain keeps falling.
No one speaks.
Not even Stella.
“And then you adopted Stella.”
“Because that same fraud told you she had a golden chart.”
“A blessed child.”
“A little good luck charm who would protect your money and bring the Hales more wealth.”
My voice isn’t loud.
But every word lands like thunder.
“You abandoned your own daughter because of a scam psychic and a stupid birth chart.”
“And now you have the nerve to talk to me about blood?”
I laugh coldly.
“You don’t deserve that word.”
“Get out.”
“Don’t dirty the Sterling estate.”
That breaks something in them.
Evelyn’s eyes roll wide.
A strange choking sound comes out of her throat.
She can’t handle the bankruptcy.
And she definitely can’t handle having the ugly secret she buried for twenty years dragged out in the open.
Her body goes stiff.
Then she drops backward into the mud.
Her whole body starts shaking.
Foam spills from her mouth.
She has a stroke right there in the rain.
“Evelyn!”
Henry panics.
He drops to his knees in the mud and shakes her like that’ll somehow fix anything.
It doesn’t.
And Stella, who’s been standing there shaking the whole time, finally snaps.
Everything she was proud of is fake.
Her perfect Hale princess life.
Her rich girl status.
Her place in Manhattan’s elite.
All of it.
She was never a beloved daughter.
She was a tool.
A lucky charm they bought because some psychic told them to.
“Claire!”
Her face twists.
“You ruined everything!”
“I’m going to kill you!”
She screams and rushes at the gate, pounding her fists against the iron bars like an animal.
I don’t move.
One of the Sterling bodyguards steps forward and kicks the gate hard enough to make her stumble back.
Stella screams and falls into the mud.
She curls up, clutching her stomach, unable to get back up.
I turn away and speak to the butler.
“Call the police.”
“Tell them someone’s causing trouble outside the Sterling estate.”
“And call an ambulance.”
“Don’t let them die at my gate.”
“It’s bad luck.”
Then I walk back into the rain without looking behind me.
I leave their screaming where it belongs. Outside.
The Hale family collapses for good.
To pay Evelyn’s medical bills after her stroke, Henry sells every house, every car, every last luxury he owns.
The once powerful chairman of Hale Holdings ends up in a leaking basement apartment.
He picks up day labor just to survive.
Silas has it even worse.
Adrian hands the police proof that Silas stole business secrets and faked financial reports.
Silas is looking at more than ten years in prison.
And billions in debt.
The night before the police take him away, Stella does something very Stella.
She sees the Cole family going down and chooses herself without a second thought.
While Silas is busy trying to save his company, she steals the last cash and gold bars from his private safe.
Then she tries to buy a plane ticket and run overseas.
Too bad she’s been spoiled her whole life.
She has no idea how to hide.
While waiting to leave the country, she ducks into an underground casino to avoid debt collectors.
She thinks she can use the cash to win more money.
Instead, she loses every dollar in one night.
Then she borrows from the wrong people and ends up owing even more.
The casino enforcers don’t care that she used to be a Manhattan socialite.
No money?
Then she pays another way.
They break her legs.
Then they sell her to an illegal overseas mining camp.
The fake heiress who once looked down on everyone becomes nothing but cheap labor in a place with no sunlight and no escape.
She never comes back.
