My Husband Asked For A Divorce On His Retirement Day—So I Revealed My 30-Year Secret Chapter 16

Griffin’s eyes were red-rimmed.

Michael stepped toward me.

“Mom, I was wrong. I really didn’t know. About the loan—give us some time. Lauren and I will figure something out. And what Dad said that night… I never should have ganged up on you like that.”

Lauren came over, too, her makeup smudged with tears. “Mom, I’m so sorry. I was only thinking about myself.”

I didn’t tell them it was all right. Because some words, once spoken, can never be unsaid.

I only replied, “My lawyer will be in touch with you within thirty days.”

Lauren bit her lip and nodded.

Suddenly, Griffin stood and blocked my path.

“Donatella, let’s not do this. All right? Let’s not get divorced.”

I looked at him. “The papers are already finalized.”

“We can remarry,” he said quickly.

“I lost my head. Amanda lied to me. We’ve been together all these years. We can’t let an outsider tear our family apart.”

I almost laughed. Even now, he thought we had ended up here because of Amanda.

“Griffin, I gave you so many chances,” I said. “You just never saw them.”

His voice grew rough. “I’ll change.”

“It’s too late.” I pushed his hand away.

“Weren’t you the one who wanted to live for yourself? Well, now you can. No one’s stopping you. Your retirement money, your benefits—you can spend them however you like. Whether Amanda scammed you, whether you get any of that travel money back… none of it has anything to do with me.”

“You’re free now.”
