The day Griffin Ricci finalized his retirement papers, the whole family came over for dinner.
I’d spent the entire afternoon in the kitchen. I had just pulled the roast chicken from the oven when he placed an envelope on the dining table.
His first words were:
“Donatella, let’s get a divorce.”
He said that for the past several decades, he’d done his duty to the family. For whatever time he had left, he wanted to live for himself.
He also said he planned to sell the house and use the money to travel through Europe with his soulmate, Amanda.
Before I could respond, our son, Michael, spoke up.
“Mom, Dad’s spent all these years with someone he doesn’t love. I feel bad for him.”
Then his wife, Lauren, added, “Everyone deserves a chance to be happy. Don’t make this any harder than it needs to be.”
My seven-year-old grandson, Leo, clutched a new toy Amanda had bought him, his face flushed with excitement.
“Amanda said she’ll take me on a Disney cruise! I want her to be my new grandma!”
They were all staring at me, waiting for me to shatter.
I just wiped my hands on a towel and asked a single question.
“Are you sure?”
No one answered.
I smiled.
Thirty days later, I signed the divorce papers. As I set down the pen, I said only one thing.
“Now that we’re finished here, there’s something I need to tell you. I’ve been keeping it a secret for thirty years.”
The room fell silent.
