After Lefting Me On The Bridge He Lost His Mind Chapter 06
I leaned back against the pillow and looked straight into his panicked eyes as I repeated his own words from that night.
“‘Relax. She can’t leave me. I’ll text her in a bit, and she’ll come crawling back.'”
With every word I spoke, more color drained from Truett’s face.
“Did I get that right, Truett? To help Chloe win her bet with Ryan, you were willing to lock me out of the car? And the fifteen thousand they lost to her—did they all pay up?”
“You went through my phone?” Truett shot to his feet, the chair scraping harshly against the floor.
“I didn’t have to,” I said quietly. “You were still logged into iMessage on my iPad.”
Truett opened his mouth, but for a long moment, no words came out.
He had always assumed I was just jealous of the attention he gave Chloe.
He thought that if he returned the twenty thousand and said a few sweet things, I would go back to tolerating it all, just like I always had.
He had no idea I’d seen every joke they’d made at my expense that night.
“Mavis, listen to me—”
Truett finally broke, taking a frantic step toward me.
“That was just Chloe being childish, insisting on making that bet with Ryan. Everyone in the group was egging them on, and I went along with it. It was stupid…”
“So you left me on a closed bridge?” I cut him off. “So even though you knew I had a 102-degree fever, you still locked the car doors and drove away?”
I glanced at the IV stand next to my bed.
“Truett, that’s what you call ‘stupid.’ The result was acute pneumonia and three days in the hospital.”
“I didn’t know you’d get this sick! I thought it was just a regular cold…”
His eyes were red with panic now. He reached for my wrist.
“If I had known it would turn out like this, I never would have abandoned you just to help her win some stupid bet.”
“It’s not that you didn’t know. It’s that you didn’t care.”
I shook his hand off and pointed to the door.
“Take your cake and get out. And don’t come back.”Â
