After Lefting Me On The Bridge He Lost His Mind Chapter 05
“I transferred the twenty thousand back to your card yesterday.”
I glanced at the cake box.
Printed on the side were the words: Matcha Mousse.
After seven years, he still didn’t remember that I was allergic to matcha.
But on Chloe’s Instagram, the most frequently featured dessert was the matcha cake from this exact shop.
When I said nothing, Truett’s expression softened. He reached for my free hand, the one without the IV.
“Come on, Mavis. Don’t be like this. With you gone these past few days, I couldn’t even find my clean shirts. I was angry when the movers came, I’ll admit it. But I’ve had time to think. I know you were just trying to force my hand, to make me give in first.”
He sighed, putting on the same regretful expression that used to make me cave every time.
“And I did. I came to make it up to you. Chloe doesn’t have family here. She’s just starting out, and she’s naive about a lot of things. I’m her boss. It’s only natural for me to look out for her. We’re getting married soon. You don’t need to be picking fights with some kid fresh out of college.”
I pulled my hand away and looked at him calmly.
“Truett, it was cold on that bridge on Thanksgiving.”
“When you left me there, did it ever once cross your mind that something bad could happen to me?”
His hand froze in midair, and his face darkened instantly.
“Mavis, how long are you going to hold onto this? I already told you—Chloe had a flat tire. It was an emergency. What more do you want from me?”
“An emergency?” My voice was hoarse, but my words were clear. “Was her flat tire an emergency, or was her bet with Ryan and the others an emergency?”
The room went silent.
Truett’s head snapped up, his pupils tightening.
“What are you talking about?”Â
