He Left Me Broken Now He Wants Me Back Chapter 20

The next afternoon, I got a call from Lakefront Medical.

“Rowan had emergency surgery last night for a perforated stomach ulcer. He’s still under sedation, but he’s woken up a few times asking for you. Would you be willing to come see him?”

My voice was steady.

“He’s a doctor at your hospital. I’m sure your staff can take care of him.”

There was a pause on the other end.

“He didn’t tell you? He resigned a while ago.”

“What?”

“I don’t know the details. I think he went to work for his family’s company.”

A gust of late autumn wind blew through the crack in my window, rustling the pages of the script on my desk.

The person on the phone kept talking. “His stomach has always been an issue, and he’s been in a few times recently. We told him to stop drinking, but after he joined that company, he had all these board dinners and investor events. I guess he felt like he couldn’t say no.”

I didn’t hear much after that.

I don’t remember when the call ended.

Rowan’s father was a strict, conservative man who had always wanted his son to take over the family’s real estate and investment business.

In college, his father had pushed for Wharton. Rowan applied to pre-med programs instead. They’d had a terrible fight, and after that, Rowan stopped going home and refused to take another dollar from his family.

He’d put himself through undergrad with scholarships and campus jobs, then paid for med school with more scholarships and a mountain of loans.

He once told me the only thing he ever wanted to be was a doctor.

I sat at my desk and slowly let out a long, shaky breath.
