I Lost Our Child Chapter 11
“He’s a very good person. Romance aside, he’s just a fundamentally good person.”
I continued with the interview as planned, as if it had nothing to do with me.
“Are you still in touch with your first love?”
Ava said, “Yes. We’re on good terms.”
After that, the questions turned to her work and future plans.
When the interview ended, we began packing up our equipment.
Just as we were about to leave, Ava called out to me.
“Alessa.”
“Thatcher’s coming to pick me up later. Do you want to join us for dinner?”
“No, thanks.”
I gathered my things and left.
When I reached the lobby, I ran into Thatcher.
I was laughing and talking with a coworker, pretending not to see him.
He stopped beside me, probably not expecting me to ignore him so completely.
Then he followed me.
“Alessa.”
My coworker looked from him to me, curious.
“Alessa, you know Mr. Santoro?”
I nodded.
“Sarah, go on ahead.”
“I need to talk to my friend for a minute.”
My coworker left.
I looked at Thatcher, but he spoke before I could.
“Why didn’t you tell her the truth?”
“Tell her I’m your husband.”
I found that a little funny.
“Small correction. Future ex-husband.”
“We’re getting divorced.”
His eyelashes trembled.
“I didn’t agree to that.”
I glanced at him.
“You were the one who brought it up. I agreed.”
He followed behind me.
“I’ll give you a ride.”
“No need. My coworker’s waiting for me.”
I tried to shake him off.
He kept following.
I smiled faintly.
“Ava’s waiting for you.”
I ignored him after that and got into the company car.
Thatcher’s car followed us.
When we came out of the restaurant after dinner, he was still waiting outside.
After my coworker left, I got into his car.
He said, “I came to pick you up.”
The fact that he hadn’t stayed with Ava was surprising enough.
On the drive home, Ava called him repeatedly.
He didn’t answer once.
In the middle of the night, Ava tried to kill herself again.
This time, it was worse.
Before Thatcher left, he stood looking at me for a long time.
Then he said, “Alessa, wait for me.”
