His Love Is Not Visible Chapter 40
But I wasn’t afraid to try anymore.
I smiled.
“I pick the restaurant.”
Ethan lifted a brow.
“Deal.”
“Just dinner.”
“Whatever you say.”
I turned and walked into the building.
After a few steps, I looked back and called out, “Don’t book the place where I took you last time.”
“Why not?”
“Too expensive.”
He laughed out loud.
“You’re a manager now and you’re still worried about that?”
“I have a mortgage to pay.”
Two sets of footprints marked the snow.
No one was chasing anyone. We were just walking slowly.
Later, Ryan told me Vanessa had gone back to Europe.
She was still dancing.
She hadn’t lost her job because of the hotel photos.
Garrett’s clarification had restored her reputation as well as mine.
It was just that she and Garrett never contacted each other again.
Ryan asked me, “Don’t you think she got off too lightly?”
I found the question almost funny.
“What did you want to happen?”
“She deleted that call and almost made you—”
He didn’t finish.
I knew what he wanted to say.
“She already lost the relationship she wanted most because of it.”
“As for me, I didn’t get a divorce to punish her.”
I swirled the Coke in my glass.
“I did it so I could live better.”
Ryan stared at me for a moment.
“No wonder Garrett still can’t get over you.”
The smile vanished from my face.
He immediately realized he’d said the wrong thing.
“Sorry.”
I didn’t pursue it.
Whether Garrett could get over me or not was his business.
My worth didn’t need his pain to prove it.
When Walter had his birthday that year, I sent him a gift.
He called after he received it, his voice still strong.
He didn’t urge me to come back to the family. He only said I should visit him when I had time.
I said I would.
Relationships don’t all disappear because of a divorce decree.
The kindness the Bancroft family once showed me was real.
The hurt Garrett caused me was real, too.
I no longer divided the past into absolute good and bad.
But I knew that forgiving the past and going back to it were two different things.
