You Thought My Turn Could Always Come Later Chapter 08
My mother, Caroline, swept in on a pair of high heels.
She had clearly rushed over; a button on her trench coat was done wrong.
“Sabine, that’s enough of this drama.”
Her tone was exactly as I remembered it.
“If your father can’t take care of you, then you can come home with me.”
“What’s so great about Boston? I can find you a much better private school.”
Ronan immediately stepped in front of me, shielding me.
“She got in here on her own. Don’t talk like you’re doing her a favor.”
Caroline let out a cold laugh.
“At least I wouldn’t make her take the bus home by herself.”
“You call yourself a father? Her emergency medicine was destroyed and you didn’t even notice.”
They started arguing right there, in front of the principal.
Each one blaming the other.
It sounded like they were fighting for me.
But really, they were just fighting over who had failed me more.
“That’s enough.”
My voice wasn’t loud, but they both fell silent.
I looked at Caroline first.
“Do you know what color my rescue inhaler is?”
She hesitated.
“Aren’t all medicines pretty much the same?”
“Then do you remember my birthday?”
“August seventeenth.”
“It’s June twenty-ninth.”
