Revenge On My Feet Chapter 11

His voice came out rough and scraped raw.

“Let’s get back together.”

“Wherever you go, I’ll go with you.”

“If you don’t like Renata, I’ll cut off all contact with her. Is that enough?”

I frowned.

Is that enough?

Even now, he believed that one small concession on his part should be enough to send me running back.

I met his eyes and let each word land on its own.

“Desmond, listen to me.”

“I’m not angry anymore. I just genuinely don’t need you in my life.”

“Whatever happens between you and Renata has nothing to do with me.”

“Let go of my arm. Otherwise, I’ll be filing a formal complaint for harassment of a client.”

For a fraction of a second his fingers clamped down harder.

Then something warm dropped onto my wrist.

He was crying.

“You won’t give me even one more chance?”

“No.”

He said nothing for a long while, and at last his hand fell away.

“Go.”

I didn’t linger. I turned and walked off, and I never once glanced back.

The days that followed carried the project along at a rapid pace.

We ran online meetings and sat down together in person at Renwick Group to work through the finer points.

The nearer we drew to signing, the heavier the workload grew.

One night I was back in my hotel room, reworking the next day’s presentation, when Yvonne called.

“Are you settling in okay in Boston?”

“You won’t give me even one more chance?”

“No.”

“I heard your ex-boyfriend is also on this project.”

“If you’re uncomfortable, I can speak directly with Mr. Renwick and have someone else assigned as your contact.”

I kept my eyes on the screen and went on adjusting the charts.

“No need. I can handle it.”

“He’s just a part of my past. He won’t affect my work.”

Yvonne let out a soft laugh on the other end of the line.

“Of course I believe you.”

“Nadia, you really are different.”
