Rowan complained in a disappointed little voice, “I took a drug for you and you’re not moved at all?”
“What if it hadn’t been this kind of drug?” My tone sharpened. “What if it had been a poison that could kill on the spot?”
The drug had turned the tips of his ears red, but beneath it, a dark exhilaration had risen in his eyes.
“Then I’d die. This life of mine doesn’t have many years left anyway.”
At last, I lost my patience and seized him by the collar.
“You lunatic.”
He was much taller than I was, yet he bent down obediently, even trembling slightly from my anger.
I dragged him to the edge of the pavilion and kicked him straight into the lake.
“Cool off. Clear your head along with the drug.”
He had survived the flooded Lorne River. He wasn’t going to drown in a lake.
A moment later, Rowan stood up in the shallows, soaked through, and looked at me with a smile.
I turned and walked away.
