I Was The Perfect Queen But He Forgot My Name Chapter 62

While Adrian was busy staging his rebellion, his wife was spiriting away Cedar Ridge’s most important members and delivering us to a farm outside the city.

Victor didn’t trust the arrangement and sent men to watch the perimeter.

Mara couldn’t have cared less. Every day she ate three full meals and dragged me out to grill meat, fish, and dig up potatoes.

Snow covered the fields, briefly hiding the struggle for power in the capital.

I stared out at the white landscape.

Mara clapped a hand on my shoulder.

“If Adrian somehow gets lucky and wins, I’ll be the future Luna Queen. I’ll protect you then.”

“But the odds of a fool like him actually succeeding are not great.”

I looked at her stomach.

“If he fails, aren’t you worried about the child?”

“Rowan promised me the baby won’t lose its pack status because of the father’s crimes. That was one of my conditions for protecting you.”

Rowan clearly had no fear of leaving so-called future trouble behind.

No matter how high the grass grew, in his eyes, it was still just grass.

Mara asked me what sort of life I would want if I could choose freely.

Every step of my life had been arranged for me since childhood. I had never really thought about it.

The charcoal fire carried the smell of food. The fields were so quiet I could hear the snow falling.

I said, “I want to see mountains and oceans. I want to write books, travel, and stop calculating how every sentence might affect which pack.”

“And I don’t want to spend my life in one estate, waiting for a mate to change his mind.”

Mara rested a hand on her belly and smiled.

When she was young, she too had wanted to go to the border and live boldly for once.

“Too late for that now. It is what it is.”
