My mother came running from the other side of the lake.
“Victoria!”
She threw herself down beside my sister, her voice cracking with sobs.
“How did you fall? Adeline! You were right there! Why didn’t you pull her back?”
Drenched and freezing, I stared at her blankly.
I had just been pulled, half-dead, from an icy lake, and yet I wasn’t surprised.
My mother’s first reaction upon seeing me was still to question why I hadn’t saved my sister properly.
Gavin’s head snapped up.
“Margaret.”
His voice was as cold as the ice on the lake.
Only then did my mother seem to remember that I had fallen in, too. Her expression flickered.
“That’s not what I meant. I’m just worried about Victoria’s old injuries. After this, what if she can never shift again…”
I suddenly laughed. A raw, empty sound.
Gavin lowered his eyes to me.
I shook my head.
“It’s fine.”
It really was fine.
Because the very last shred of expectation I’d had for my mother had finally, completely, disappeared.
The matter should have ended there.
But that night, the villa manager came to my father, the head of security in tow.
They had detained a temporary worker who was responsible for maintaining the wooden bridge.
