At My Baby Shower He Celebrated Another Woman’s Child Chapter 17
From the gallery, Brooke shot to her feet.
“You’re lying!”
The scratches on her face hadn’t fully healed, and her voice was shrill.
“You were the one who told me to cut the first half! You said as long as we only showed Nora pounding on the door, she’d never be able to explain it!”
Sadie whipped around.
“At the party, you admitted it yourself! You taught me how to edit it, and you wrote out what I should say!”
“Order!”
The judge slammed his gavel.
The two women fell silent, but they had already pushed each other off the cliff.
Every guest at the banquet had heard their fight.
And now, in a court of law, they were each confirming the other’s crimes.
I didn’t have to say a word.
The protective order was revoked on the spot, and the record of my supposed threat was forwarded for formal review.
Before the judge left the bench, the prosecutor stopped Sadie and Brooke.
“Neither of you is to leave the state. We have further questions for you regarding the fabrication of evidence and filing a false police report.”
The tears on Sadie’s face dried instantly.
She turned to Graham.
“You’re a lawyer. Help me.”
But Graham only stared at my image on the screen, his lips bloodless.
“Nora, I didn’t know that screenshot was fake.”
“But you knew you never heard me threaten her.”
He froze.
I went on. “You weren’t fooled. You just decided sacrificing me was easier than offending Sadie.”
The hearing ended. I closed the laptop.
Outside the window, the Chicago morning light was clear and bright.
June set a cup of hot milk beside me.
“What’s next?”
I opened the documents my lawyer had sent and signed the last page of each one.
The divorce petition. The motion to freeze our joint assets. The disciplinary complaint against Graham.
Three filings. Not one missing.
“Next, they answer for every lie.”
