At My Baby Shower He Celebrated Another Woman’s Child Chapter 18
Graham received the notice of the disciplinary investigation in the middle of a partners’ meeting.
On the conference table lay the insurance policy change I had printed out and the statements from our joint account.
He had once told two of these very colleagues that it was all just a temporary arrangement.
Now, neither of them spoke up in his defense.
The managing partner slid the notice across the polished wood.
“You assured the police, as an officer of the court, that Ms. Whitmore had repeatedly threatened Ms. Mercer and her child. We’re going to need you to produce those threats.”
Graham swallowed.
“The situation was urgent. I believed what my family told me.”
“Family?”
The partner glanced at the beneficiary name on the insurance file.
“You changed your wife and daughter’s life insurance policy to benefit your sister-in-law—the same woman whose resort bills overlap with yours—and then you helped get your eight-months-pregnant wife detained. How exactly are we supposed to believe this was a simple lapse in judgment?”
Graham had no answer.
Outside the conference room, Sadie waited for an hour, holding Clara.
The moment he emerged, she hurried toward him.
“You have to represent me. Brooke has pinned everything on me.”
“I can’t represent you.”
Graham walked past her without a glance.
“I have a direct conflict of interest.”
Sadie grabbed his sleeve.
“Oh, now you want to keep your distance? You changed the insurance beneficiary with your own two hands, and when they took Nora away, you were the one who told the cops she was crazy!”
Heads turned in the hallway.
Graham lowered his voice.
“Let go.”
