At My Baby Shower He Celebrated Another Woman’s Child Chapter 16

Three days later, I sat at the dining table in my new Chicago apartment, attending a remote hearing.

On the screen, Sadie wore a plain dress, her eyes swollen and red.

Her lawyer kept emphasizing that she was just a young mother, raising a child alone, who had acted out of fear and pressure.

It was just like a year ago.

As long as she held Clara and cried, every cruelty could be reframed as fragility.

The judge asked, “Ms. Whitmore, why do you believe the original protective order should be revoked?”

My lawyer enlarged two screenshots, placing them side by side.

One was from my phone.

*If you have the guts, come get your daughter’s things.*

The sender was Sadie.

The other was the so-called threat Sadie had shown the police.

*Clara was supposed to be mine. I’m taking her, and you can’t stop me.*

That sentence had never existed on my phone.

“The original message was on the device seized by police that night,” my lawyer stated. “Ms. Whitmore asked the officers to verify it on the spot, but Mr. Mercer, acting in his dual capacity as both her husband and an attorney, identified her as emotionally unstable.”

Graham, seated behind Sadie, jerked his head up.

Finally, he understood. The business card he had so confidently handed over that night had become the first nail in his own coffin.

Sadie bit her lip.

“I was just so scared. Maybe I got the screenshots mixed up.”

“And the doorbell footage?” the judge asked.

“Brooke helped me organize it. I didn’t know she had edited it.”
