At My Baby Shower He Celebrated Another Woman’s Child Chapter 15

“You made me lose my daughter. There are no second chances for that. Our marriage died the moment Iris’s heart stopped beating.”

“Nora…”

“Your lawful wife is Sadie. You should go back and deal with the mess you made together. As for my future, you won’t be a part of it.”

I hung up and blocked his number.

June glanced at me. “Where to now?”

“The airport.”

I had already instructed my lawyer to sell my share of the family’s seaside property. With the proceeds, I had rented an apartment in Chicago.

No Mercers. No Whitmores. No one telling me where I was allowed to live.

The rain was gradually letting up.

June asked, “And after that?”

I looked out at the streets, washed clean by the storm.

“I’ll rest. Then I’ll start working again. For my daughter, and for myself, I’m going to live well.”

A few hours later, the plane lifted off from Charleston.

I took Iris’s urn from the white gift box and held it tightly to my chest. The city shrank beneath us, and all the betrayal, the sobbing, and the late-coming remorse were finally left behind.

I lowered my head and kissed the cold glass.

At least this time, we were finally on our own path.

By the time the plane landed in Chicago, June had just switched her phone off airplane mode when it began buzzing with notifications.

There was an email from my lawyer.

The police had agreed to reopen the review into the threatening screenshot Sadie had submitted and the edited doorbell footage. The message she had sent me—*If you have the guts, come get your daughter’s things*—was still preserved on the phone they had confiscated from me that night.

At the end of the email, my lawyer asked:

*Shall we proceed with the criminal complaint, the bar disciplinary complaint, and the divorce asset preservation filing?*

I looked down at Iris’s urn in my arms and typed my reply.

*Withdraw nothing.*
