You Shipped Me Off I Married Your Boss Chapter 03
“Brian, don’t misunderstand. Skylar didn’t mean it—”
“You’re still defending her!”
“I’ve been watching her pull this crap since we were kids. I’ve seen enough!”
Brian scooped Natalie into his arms.
Fixed me with a cold stare. Fury burned in his eyes.
“Skylar. Apologize.”
“Brian—”
“Shut up and apologize.”
Natalie curled against his chest, crying in tiny, pitiful sobs.
My knee was bleeding.
Blood traced two stark lines down my calf to my ankle.
Impossible to miss.
But Brian looked straight through it.
He looked at me like I was something monstrous.
I didn’t have a single word left to fight with.
“I apologize.”
Something flickered across his face.
But then his anger sharpened.
“Not enough.”
I straightened up and bent into a deep bow.
“Is this better?”
Natalie looked at me. The corner of her mouth curved, just barely.
Then she turned to Brian, sniffling, her voice soft.
“That’s enough, Brian. I can’t accept that anyway.”
Brian’s face twisted with something raw. Pain.
“Skylar. I told you. Natalie is different. Hurting her won’t make me leave her. It only makes me care about her more. Despise you more.”
He turned and walked away with her still in his arms.
I stood there a long, long time.
My knee throbbed.
But my chest felt hollow. Light.
And I knew. Right there in that moment.
The obsession. The years of longing.
It all shattered into dust.
Gone.
