You Shipped Me Off I Married Your Boss Chapter 04
That night, Natalie posted three Instagram stories.
Someone in our circle, someone with an agenda, screenshotted them and sent them to me.
They’d circled Brian’s replies in particular.
I knew what they wanted.
To watch me humiliate myself again.
Every other time, I’d go charging in, crying, making a scene.
He’d get annoyed. But in the end, he’d always give in.
And that fed the illusion. That I mattered. Kept me charging back for more.
Not this time.
Instead, I returned a call from seven days ago.
“Aunt Helen. It’s Skylar. I’ve thought about what you said. I’ve made my decision.”
My parents died in an accident when I was seven.
Mr. Crawford and my father had been friends through the Yale alumni network. He took me in.
And Aunt Helen—she was my mother’s closest friend growing up.
But later, she’d run off with the man she loved and lost touch.
By the time her wandering life finally settled in Chicago, my parents were already gone.
Aunt Helen wanted me to come live with her.
She also wanted to fulfill the promise she’d made with my mother all those years ago.
For me to marry her son. To become the mistress of the Campbell family.
Seven days ago, I’d said no.
But I didn’t want to hurt her. So I told her I’d think about it.
But tonight, I finally let go.
Years of one-sided devotion. Stupid. Embarrassing.
I was done being the joke of our social circle.
Six months ago, Brian arranged for me to continue my studies at the University of Chicago.
Back then I’d fought him on it. Cried for days.
But he never budged.
Now it felt like a gift.
Maybe it had always been fate.
On the other end of the line, Aunt Helen’s joy spilled over.
“Skylar, Liam’s been waiting for you to say yes. He’s ready to fly to LA and propose.”
I gripped my phone, heat creeping into my face.
But the laughter in my ear felt distant. Surreal.
Fifteen years living together. Seven years loving him.
And it only took seven days to let him go.
