Brian and Natalie chose my flight to Chicago for their engagement.
So there weren’t many people to see me off.
When I turned my phone on after landing, messages flooded in.
Most of them were about the engagement.
I smiled. Deleted the contacts. Blocked them. Every last one.
Before I came to Chicago, I’d met Liam Campbell.
I didn’t want drama. No attention.
Liam respected that.
He proposed. We exchanged rings. A quiet, private engagement.
My bank account changed by ten million dollars.
A plain band appeared on my middle finger.
I was heading to the car that would take me to the Campbell estate when my phone rang.
Madison Crawford. Brian’s cousin.
“Skylar! My brother’s engagement ceremony is about to start. Where are you?”
“Just landed in Chicago.”
“Get back here! Now. You can still make it.”
“For what?”
My voice was calm.
Madison paused.
“Skylar, are you so heartbroken you’ve lost your mind? If you don’t come back and fight for him, he’s really going to be someone else’s.”
“Why would I fight for him? Isn’t this a happy occasion for your brother?”
“Skylar?”
Her voice pitched higher.
“Have you gone insane?”
I was about to hang up when Natalie’s voice came through.
“Skylar? Aren’t you coming to our engagement?”
