His Number Changed So I Changed My Life Chapter 09
After my father cheated, I cut off all contact with him.
My mother once begged me to keep his number for emergencies, just in case. I deleted it anyway. After that day, I never called him Dad again.
It was the same now.
“I won’t call the police,” I said, “on one condition: you agree to the divorce and cover all of Austin’s damages.”
Austin glanced at me but didn’t object.
I took out the settlement proposal, the acknowledgment of service, and the petition for an uncontested divorce.
“My lawyer already drew everything up. You can have your own lawyer look it over.”
Parker stared at me, unable to accept that I was really ready to walk away.
Madison tugged on his sleeve, a silent reminder that she wanted this whole mess to disappear.
After a long moment, he said, “Fine.”
He skimmed the last page, then signed his name on the acknowledgment and the settlement agreement.
He tossed the pen back at me.
“I’d like to see how long you last. You haven’t worked in five years. Who’s going to pay your bills when you leave me?”
He let out a cold laugh.
“Don’t come crying to me in a few months.”
He seemed to have forgotten that he was the one who had asked me to quit my job.
He’d said his hours were too unpredictable, that if I was working too, we might go days without seeing each other. He could support our family, he’d said, and he wanted me to be free to do only what made me happy.
Now, that five-year gap on my résumé was a weapon he was pointing right at me.
I put the papers away.
The 2 above his head was stark and clear. Madison stood beside him, the tears already gone from her eyes.
I had no desire to win back a man who would lie to me and sleep with someone else.
