I didn’t go home.
I drove to my grandfather Arthur Vance’s estate.
The estate was quiet, occupied only by the housekeeper and a few staff.
I walked into the bedroom I’d had since childhood and saw several couture gowns that weren’t mine in the corner of the closet.
On the vanity sat the brand of perfume Serena always wore.
The housekeeper explained apologetically, “Miss Serena comes to stay from time to time. She said it was more convenient to leave a few things here.”
I nodded, saying nothing.
I walked into the closet and retrieved my passport, several key trust documents, and the pair of sapphire earrings my mother had left me.
Even here, in my childhood home, there were traces of Serena everywhere.
On the desk in the study was a framed photograph.
In it, my grandfather and Serena were at a charity event.
My grandfather was beaming, his eyes full of pride as he looked at her.
I looked away. I didn’t feel much of anything.
I just remembered what my grandfather told me when I first decided to marry Liam.
“Elara, remember your name. Don’t let your feelings cloud your judgment about value.”
Looking back now, he’d been right.
