I was eighteen again, in the school auditorium.
He stood on the stage in his graduation gown.
The microphone was a little too low for him, so he had to dip his head as his voice filled the vast hall.
I can’t remember what he said.
I only remember that the stage lights were blinding, and he stood within their glow as if he were separated from the rest of the world.
At twenty-two, after countless rounds of interviews, I finally landed an internship at his company.
When he had time, he would mentor me himself.
We’d be working on a proposal, and he would stand behind my chair and lean in close, his finger pointing to the data on my screen.
“Here. The logic is flawed.”
I could feel his breath on my ear.
I wouldn’t dare to move, my heart hammering so hard it felt unreal.
Once, we worked so late that the entire floor was empty except for the two of us.
Without a word, he set a mug of hot milk on my desk before turning and disappearing back into his office.
After that, I always thought hot milk was the most wonderful taste in the world.
And then, later, there were the nights we spent together.
In my dream, all I could feel were his arms around me, the familiar scent of his body wash.
When I fell asleep, he would rest his chin on the top of my head, his breathing slow and even against my hair.
When I woke from the dream, the room was still dark.
The valley outside was completely silent.
Then my phone screen lit up.
