My mother stood and took the final document from her folder.
It was a printed screenshot of an iMessage conversation.
“This was provided by Nathan Cole. It’s a chat record between him and Chris. It reads as follows.”
She read the contents aloud.
“‘Nathan, help me create a reimbursement form for September twenty-third.”
“Put Bianca Pierce in the signature field. Try to copy her handwriting. If this works, I’ll get you an officer position in the student council next semester.’”
The office was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
Chris’s face went from white to blotchy red.
“I… I…”
He suddenly shot to his feet, his voice sharp with panic.
“Veronica told me to do it.”
“It was her idea from the start. She said Bianca was getting too much attention, and she wanted to take her down a peg.”
“She told me to forge the form. She was the one who found those witnesses. The report accusing Wade of cheating was her idea, too.”
“I just did what she said. I didn’t think it would get this serious.”
He turned and pointed a shaking hand at Veronica.
“She also said that even if something went wrong, her aunt Holloway would protect us and it would all be fine—”
“Shut up!” Veronica screamed.
But it was too late.
Kate’s camera had recorded every word.
