“Mommy, it’s me, Chloe. Why haven’t you come to find me?”
“Mommy, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have lied to you. Come home with me, okay? I really miss you…”
Leo shrank behind me, his grip on my hand tightening.
I looked down at his trembling lashes, then at Chloe.
The word “Mommy” was a painful stab.
I couldn’t even remember the last time she had called me that.
Maybe before Thanksgiving.
Maybe even earlier.
Marco walked over.
The collar of his coat was askew, and exhaustion shadowed the skin beneath his eyes.
He looked at me first, then glanced at Julian standing behind me. His Adam’s apple bobbed. When he spoke, his voice was hoarse.
“Beatrice, I came to take you home.”
“Chloe’s been looking for you every day. She cries in her sleep. She knows she was wrong.”
“I’m not going back.”
I cut him off.
“I have a home now.”
Then I gently pried Chloe’s arms from my legs and took two steps back with Leo.
