My Family Regret When They Lose Me Chapter 14
Being with him was easy.
It wasn’t until we reached the restaurant that I snapped out of my thoughts.
Julian lowered his head and looked at me, a hint of a smile in his eyes.
“What are you thinking about? You look happy.”
Heat crept up my neck, and I lowered my head to unbuckle Leo’s seat belt.
Leo took my hand as he got out of the car. His boots sank into the snow with a soft crunch.
He looked down at the white powder gathering on his shoes, stared for a few seconds, then bent and scooped up a handful of snow.
A sudden impulse hit me.
“Want to have a snowball fight?”
The words were barely out before I froze.
There had been one winter in New York when it snowed heavily.
I had excitedly suggested that the three of us go downstairs and play.
Chloe, clutching her iPad, hadn’t even looked up.
“That’s for babies. I don’t want to.”
Marco had called out from the study.
“I’m busy. Go by yourself.”
In the end, I stood downstairs alone for ten minutes with snow gathering on my shoulders before going back inside.
Julian looked surprised, but then he smiled.
“Okay.”
He bent down, packed a snowball, and threw it at me.
His aim was terrible. It flew right past my shoulder.
I was about to throw one back when I heard Leo speak.
“Mommy… I’ll help you.”
That one word, Mommy, made my heart melt.
“Okay. We’ll get him together.”
Snowballs flew back and forth.
Julian dodged clumsily.
At last, Leo managed to hit him. Julian threw himself backward dramatically and fell straight into the snow.
Leo actually laughed out loud.
And right then, I saw two people standing below the steps of the restaurant’s side entrance.
One big, one small. Both were bundled in thick down jackets, as if they’d traveled a long way.
It was Marco and Chloe.
Chloe stared at the hand Leo and I had clasped together. Her eyes slowly turned red, and her lips began to tremble.
The instant I looked over, she wrenched herself away from Marco, stumbled toward me, and wrapped herself around my legs as she burst into tears.
“Mommy! Don’t you want me anymore?”
