He Called Me A Stone And Chose Her Pearl Chapter 08
I don’t know how I made it out of the library.
The feelings I had cherished for two years, the debates and admiration scribbled in the margins of books—they had all been turned into weapons and aimed straight at my heart.
The driver saw the look on my face. “Should we still go to Mrs. Lawson’s house?” he asked carefully.
I stared out the window.
“Yes.”
I didn’t want to stay in this city a second longer than I had to.
I stopped at a shopping center on the way to fix my hair and clothes. By the time I arrived at Sophie’s lakeside villa, I was very late.
I assumed he would be gone.
But when I stepped into the glass pavilion, someone was still there.
He stood with his back to me, broad-shouldered and straight, dressed in a simple black jacket. At the sound of my footsteps, he turned.
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
Sophie had told me Mr. Grant was quiet. She had failed to mention he was also devastatingly handsome.
The man was studying me, too.
His gaze was sharp at first, like a commander inspecting his troops, but it quickly softened.
“Mr. Grant, I’m so sorry,” I said, finding my voice. “Something came up on the way. I’ve kept you waiting far too long.”
He arched a brow.
“A meeting?”
“If you don’t want to continue, I understand. I’ll explain to Sophie. It was my fault.”
He didn’t answer right away, just touched the bridge of his nose.
“Then tell me first—what kind of person are you looking for?”
Heat crept up my neck, but I answered honestly.
“The kind of person isn’t important. What’s important is that he’s willing to choose me, and only me, for the rest of his life. That he won’t compare me to anyone else, or waver between me and someone else.”
“Sophie told me a little about you. I… I’m not opposed to the idea.”
A rare hint of nerves touched his expression.
“So you know about my situation?”
I nodded, then told him about my family and my status in the Greenvale Pack.
When I learned that he also enjoyed reading, I mentioned a few histories on border conflicts I had recently finished. To my surprise, he was incredibly knowledgeable about territorial governance and military supply lines.
The more we talked, the more I felt at ease.
Ten minutes later, Sophie and Reid rushed in, both of them looking flustered.
Sophie grabbed my arm and lowered her voice.
“There’s been a mistake. Mr. Grant had to—”
The man shot her a look, and she fell silent.
He turned back to me, his expression serious. “Laurel is quiet and honest. I’m willing to move forward, with marriage as the goal.”
“Laurel, are you?”
