The pavilion fell silent.
The cup in Reid’s hand slipped from his grasp, landing softly on the carpet. Sophie’s eyes were wide, her mouth agape.
I was just as stunned.
The man before me seemed sincere, but we had only just met. We had spoken for all of ten minutes.
How could he be so certain?
Under his intense gaze, all I could do was look to Sophie for help.
She finally seemed to recover, giving him a complicated look.
“Theo, shouldn’t this be a private discussion? Asking her like this puts Laurel in a difficult position.”
So his name was Theo.
He seemed to realize he’d been too direct, and the tips of his ears turned red.
“My apologies. I was too hasty.”
“But I meant every word. You don’t have to decide now. You can take your time to think it over.”
Reid finally found his voice.
“I’ve known Theo for years. He doesn’t make promises lightly. He wouldn’t say something like this if he weren’t sincere.”
“Laurel, you can trust him.”
I thought about it, really thought about it.
Reid worked for the Royal Council, coordinating transport between the packs, and he had always been a steady, reliable man. If he was willing to vouch for Theo, it meant the man’s character was sound.
More importantly, our conversation had, for the first time, made me feel like someone was truly listening to what I had to say.
I didn’t want to hesitate.
“Alright.”
“I’m willing to try.”
Theo looked at me, and a slow smile spread across his face, lighting up his eyes.
Those eyes, usually so sharp, were suddenly, astonishingly gentle.
